New Role for Lis1 in behavior

Mature Hippocampal Neurons Require LIS1 for Synaptic Integrity: Implications for Cognition

LIS1 mutations disrupt neuronal migration during human brain development, but little is known of the role LIS1 plays postnatally. In this study, Sudarov et al. used genetic and imaging tools to manipulate LIS1 after neuronal migration is completed in mice.  Altogether, their data reveal a critical role for LIS1 in the maintenance of synaptic integrity and communication between neurons in mature brain. This implies a potential role for LIS1 in modulating neuropsychiatric disorders including schizophrenia and dementia.
